Understanding Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye is more than just a bit of irritation; it’s now recognised as a disease, and it can really take a toll if left unmanaged.
Dry Eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This imbalance leads to persistent discomfort, making daily activities like reading, working with screens or even relaxing, feel difficult.
Common Causes
- Blocked Oil Glands (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction- MGD)
- Reduced Tear Production
- Eyelid Inflammation (Blepharitis)
- Lifestyle factors such as medications, health conditions, hobbies, work or make up
The Tear Film
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
The tear film that protects and nourishes your eyes consists of three layers: a mucous layer that helps tears adhere to the eye surface, an aqueous (watery) layer that provides moisture and nutrients, and a lipid (oily) layer that prevents rapid evaporation.
When any of these layers are compromised, dry eye symptoms can develop.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
MGD is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye, and affects the lipid (oily) layer of your tears. The meibomian glands, found in your upper and lower eyelids, produce the essential oils that form this protective barrier.
When these glands become blocked, inflamed, or dysfunctional, the lipid layer becomes insufficient, causing your tears to evaporate up to sixteen times faster than normal.

The Benefits of a Dry Eye Consultation
If your eyes often feel dry, tired, or gritty, a Dry Eye Consultation is the first step toward real, lasting relief. This appointment allows us to look more in depth into what’s causing your symptoms and create a treatment plan that truly works for you.
Get real answers, not guesswork
Many people try endless eye drops without relief. Our consultation uncovers the true cause of your discomfort, whether it’s inflammation, blocked glands, or tear film imbalance, so treatment is targeted, not by trial and error.
Personalised treatment plan
No two patients are the same. Your plan is built around your unique symptoms, lifestyle, and test results, helping you achieve faster, longer-lasting comfort.
Access to advanced technology
From detailed imaging of your tear glands to in-clinic treatments like BlephEx or IPL, our assessments go beyond what’s possible in a standard eye test.
Long-term relief and prevention
We don’t just treat flare-ups – we help you protect your eyes for the future. With the right care, you can reduce inflammation, improve comfort, and prevent further dryness over time.
What to Expect from Your Dry Eye Consultation
Your eyes deserve more than a quick check. During your Dry Eye Consultation, we take the time to truly understand what’s causing your discomfort – combining advanced technology with a caring, personalised approach.
- 1 Hour - Time for detailed assessment, testing and discussion.
- No Discomfort - No injections or pain.
- No Downtime - Drive immediately after your consultation.
- Comprehensive Results - Immediate feedback and personalised treatment plan.
We’ll begin by discussing your symptoms and daily habits before carrying out a series of gentle, non-invasive tests. These may include detailed imaging of your eyelid glands, assessment of your tear film quality, and measurements of tear volume, stability and inflammation. Each step helps us build a complete picture of your eye health.
Once we have your results, we’ll talk you through them clearly and create an individual treatment plan designed around your needs. Whether that includes home care advice, prescription eye drops, in-practice treatments such as BlephEx or IPL, or lifestyle adjustments, you’ll leave with a clear understanding of the next steps and how to start feeling more comfortable.
Advanced Dry Eye Treatments
Once we’ve identified the cause of your dry eye, we can recommend targeted treatments that go beyond standard eye drops. Each option is designed to restore balance to your tear film, improve comfort, and protect your eyes for the long term.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
A light-based treatment that targets inflammation and unclogs the oil glands in your eyelids. It helps your tears stay on the eye surface longer, reducing dryness and irritation over time.
BlephEx
A deep-cleaning treatment for your eyelids that removes bacteria, debris, and hardened oils. It leaves your eyes feeling fresher and helps your natural tear film work more effectively.
Punctal Plugs
Tiny plugs placed in your tear ducts to slow drainage and keep natural tears on your eyes for longer-lasting hydration and comfort.
Lacrimal Syringing
A simple procedure used to diagnose any blockages in your tear drainage system, often improving comfort and reducing watery eyes caused by poor tear flow.
Personalised Dry Eye Treatment Plan
No two cases of dry eye are the same, and that’s exactly why your care shouldn’t be either.
At our specialist Dry Eye Clinic in Shawlands, Glasgow, every treatment plan begins with a thorough assessment of your tear film, eyelid health, and meibomian glands using advanced diagnostic imaging. From there, we’ll create a personalised plan designed specifically for you, focusing on the underlying cause of your symptoms rather than just easing the surface discomfort.
Your personalised plan may include a combination of in-practice treatments such as IPL therapy, BlephEx deep cleaning, punctal plugs, or targeted at-home care routines, supported nutritional and lifestyle advice, and highly effective eye drops.
Everything is explained clearly so you understand each step and feel confident in your care, because effective dry eye management should be as individual as you are.
Ongoing Support & Monitoring
Managing dry eye can be a journey and our specialist optometrists will be with you every step of the way.
After your initial treatment plan is in place, we’ll schedule regular review appointments to assess your progress and perfect your care as your eyes begin to respond.
Our goal is to achieve long-term comfort, not just short-term relief, so we keep a close eye (literally) on how your glands and tear film are improving over time.
You’ll always have access to professional advice and practical support between visits, whether you wish to ask a question, need reassurance, product guidance, or a simple check-in.
