ORTHO- K LENSES

Ortho-K Lenses or Orthokeratology lenses are a revolutionary way of correcting short-sightedness
(Myopia).

Instead of wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision through the day, these lenses are worn during the night while you sleep. You can think of these being similar to a night time retainer for helping teeth stay straight.

Benefits:

Reversible- Unlike other vision correction methods such as Laser eye surgery, Ortho K lenses are very low risk and effects are reversible. If the lens wear is stopped, the cornea gradually moulds back to its original shape in a matter of days.

Safe- These contact lenses are a well- established medical product, made from a high quality material safe for wearing at night and sleeping in. Due to being worn less often than daily contact lenses they are actually slightly safer than regular contact lenses. If any problems arise they can simply be removed and wear ceased. As with any contact lens, compliance and attending regular contact lens appointments is very important to prevent problems such as eye infections.

No pain- Once adapted, the lenses are comfortable to wear and do not press hard on the eye. It is a very gradual and gentle pull to redistribute the cells at the front of the eye to reshape.

Myopia Management- Along with improving distance vision in short- sightedness, Ortho K lenses have the added benefit of slowing myopia progression in young people, therefore classed as an effect myopia management method. Ortho K lenses are thought to slow myopia progression by 50%

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to buy Ortho K contact lenses?

This can vary from person to person, we would recommend replacement on average annually. However the lenses will be assessed normally every 6 months.

How long does it take to see results with Ortho K?

The efficacy of these lenses depends on the baseline prescription, however most people will notice an improvement in vision after the first few nights of wear. Most will notice fully corrected daytime vision from around 1 week of use every night. We carry out review appointments at the beginning of wear to ensure vision is correcting the way we anticipate.

Are there side effects of wearing Ortho K?

The same as any contact lens, if worn correctly, and attend for check-ups when invited, it significantly reduces risk of any side effect. On fitting, we will teach and build confidence in handling the contact lenses before you take them home. We will also provide you with a care document. We will also be available to arrange any follow- up appointments with any queries or problems. If instructions are followed, there will be less risk of infection or other associated lens problems.
